Once I learned how to make home made caramel sauce, I have not gone back to the store bought version. That way I can control the quantity I want to have in my fridge at a time without worrying if it would take up space and be one of those things I do not end up using all year. I mostly whip this up towards the end of the year because there are more holidays during this period. So there are more desserts that require a little more caramel goodness.
I used this caramel sauce for my milo cake bites yesterday and it was absolutely divine. My mum came home with some decadent ice-cream and I decided to drizzle some of the sauce on it as well. I need to quickly finish the tiny portion I’ve made if not I would drizzle it on my fried plantain if possible. Actually, that is a possibility if I am making a dessert out of plantains. I digress! I am currently keeping this in my fridge to see how long it would last for so I would come back to update this post after my experiment is done. Enjoy this simple recipe.
Recipe for Home Made Caramel Sauce
Ingredients
1/2 cup of Granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon of Salt
1 tablespoon of butter
1/4 cup of Cream
3 tablespoons of water
1 teaspoon of Vanilla extract
Method
In a pot on medium heat, add the sugar, butter and water and stir in till sugar has dissolved.
Increase the heat to bring it to boil so sugar starts to caramelize (changes color to brown).
Once it starts browning, reduce the heat to low heat, add your salt, vanilla extract and cream and continue to stir gently till smooth and all ingredients are combined.
Allow sauce to thicken a little bit and take off the heat to cool.
Drizzle on your favorite desserts.
