• Ofe Di Na Nwayi

My best friend got engaged a couple weeks back so I have been secretly(well not so secret anymore) researching wedding stuff and of course food came to mind. I started asking around for recipes that were particular to newly weds and this interesting dish came up.  For my newly-wed blog followers that are ibo or married to an ibo person, this dish would be right up your alley. Ofe Di Na Nwayi means husband and wife soup. For people that are not Nigerian and read my blog, Ofe means soup and Di na Nwayi means husband and wife. This soup is cooked with the heart of a cow as the main protein and the idea is the husband and wife must eat from the same plate for this dish. (Very romantic huh?) I call it the “love soup.” For my ibo followers that know how to make okazi soup, this is very similar to Okazi. The main difference is the choice of protein used. I chose to enjoy this delicious soup with Pounded Yam.

Recipe for Ofe Di Na Nwayi

    Ingredients

    1 medium sized stock fish

5 medium sized chunks of cow heart

    8 medium pieces of crayfish

1 cup of egusi (blended melon seeds)

1 small bunch of shredded okazi

    1 small bulb of onion

1.5 cooking spoons of palm oil

    2 seasoning cubes

1 teaspoon of salt (or add more as needed)

    2 teaspoons of dry pepper

    Method

Wash the stockfish and season with salt, pepper, onions and 1 seasoning cube and bring to boil as this takes a longer time to soften.

Add the washed cow heart to the pot of boiling stockfish till both are soft.

Add more pepper, the crayfish, seasoning cube and palm oil and stir.

Add the blended egusi powder and allow to boil for 8-10 minutes on medium heat so the egusi can cook.

Lastly add the shredded okazi leaves and stir. Allow to cook for 5 more minutes on low heat and serve with your carbohydrate of choice.

You can cook without cow heart but that defeats the purpose of it being the love soup. You can cook without cow heart however 🙂
