Protein or Carbohydrates? Which is the Luxury item in a meal?

Is dieting the best idea? I have many friends that go on numerous diets month after month and still end up gaining all the weight back(myself included). I do understand that when you are in the process of losing weight, you would need to limit your intake of certain items. However, sometimes it makes me wonder if your body doesn’t go on a binge immediately you see that food you have been avoiding the next time.

Nigerian food is usually a large portion of carbohydrates with a tiny portion of protein and a tinier portion of vegetables if any. We were brought up that way. It was a privilege to have one piece of meat in your plate. Protein was the luxury item. However, its time to change that mindset. Let carbohydrates be the luxury item for a change. Let your plates contain protein and vegetables in abundance and very tiny portions of carbohydrates.

Afrolems would be uploading sample plates with portion sizes of our favorite Nigerian food. This hopefully ought to change our mindset about carbohydrates and probably get rid of a few inches. Lets start with Moin-Moin (Bean Pudding). Need the recipe? Leave a comment.

I completely agree, there is a predisposition for us to consume more carbohydrate. I think we also have to remember that protein isn’t always animal based…..I find that Nigerians are quick to pick up actual meat when it comes to protein, we never consider legumes and nuts.

Are those leaves I see in the moinmoin? And bell peppers on the plate? I would love to have this recipe.
